What Are Glueless Wigs?

When wearing a wig there’s a sense of confidence that you carry when you know you have secured it properly. Securing a wig can often be done with an adhesive so that you have little to no chance of it getting off your head. However, for some who don’t like the feeling of any form of adhesive (whether wig tapes or wig glues) the glueless wig is the preferred choice.

What is a Glueless Wig?

The name quite obviously suggests that it is basically a wig that does not need any form of adhesion agent to keep it in place. So how does a glueless wig hold on to your scalp? These wigs are made with a design that has straps underneath and sometimes some form of hooking or clasping mechanism inside the cap (like combs or hair clips) which help secure the wig in place. You can also consider glueless wigs without the complete set of those attachments. Sometimes they simply come with either the clips or the adjustable straps.

What does It Hold On To?

With the lack of an anchoring point for the glueless wig, it is best to set one on your head that acts as a layer in between the scalp and the wig. We’re talking about wig caps. Depending on what glueless wig you are wearing, you will have options of where the wig will attach on to the wig cap.

Lace Front Vs Full Lace

Glueless wigs are also known as glueless lace wigs because of its build. The wig hair strands are attached to the lace base that will latch on to the wig cap.

Lace front glueless wigs have lacings fixed at the frontal linings of the wig cap. This gives the wig its name “lace front” and has a beautiful placement that makes the wearer seem like they have a natural hairline. The seemingly natural hairline can also be attributed to the tight fixation of the lace over at the front of the wig cap. The wig’s lace can also be tightened just behind the ears because it is stretchy. You will need to use clips to secure that stretched lace. Between this and a Full Lace glueless wig, this is the less expensive option. The main disadvantage of this over the full lace option is that it doesn’t really secure very well at the back and you might experience some looseness at that area.

Full lace glueless wigs have wider coverage of lace at the wig’s foundation and with a stretchy section that wraps around the crown of the head. Because they are more expensive you will often observe them to also have a greater density of follicle count per area, which means a lot of resources were used in making this type of wig. Unlike the lace front glueless wig, you can style this wig better because of its better hold on to the wig (e.g ponytail, bun, side-part etc.).

Is It Really Better to Go Glueless?

To be clear, those who opt for any adhesive measures (whether glue or even double-sided wig tape) are looking for solutions to really secure their wigs when doing intense activity. If you don’t really need to attach your wig that much, a glueless wig, when worn properly can be secured quite well.

Another advantage of going glueless, especially for those with scalps coming in direct contact with the wig, is that your skin’s pores get to breathe instead of being blocked by adhesive material. Probably the disadvantage with glueless wigs that come with adjustable bands is that if they are strapped on too tight it can give you a headache.

Glueless wigs are also more convenient overall because you will not need to go through the ritual of applying the adhesives and dealing with them every time you have to take off your wig. If in fact you are wearing a wig over your own natural hair, you will find it makes more sense to NOT use glue or tape on it so glueless wigs are the obvious choice.

Wig Grip Headbands Also Help

Recently we talked about wearing wigs while swimming. One of the glueless options for securing a wig is through wearing a wig grip headband which is basically a headband that wraps around your scalp tightly and provides a traction surface that lets your wig hold on to. This is another choice for you if you find that clips and combs attaching to wig caps isn’t your thing.

Just remember, a big part of wearing a wig securely is wearing it properly. Practice makes perfect as you begin to familiarize yourself with which areas of your head needs more attention and adjustment so your wig stays in place.
